Partners: Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)
WP Leader: Patricia Vogel
Aim: To ensure the successful achievement of the GO-SKA project deliverables and to manage relationships between the GO-SKA project and the wider SKA collaboration.
WP2: Building a globally coordinated collaboration for the SKA
Partner: Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)
WP Leader: Simon Berry (until January 2014, replacement pending)
The main activities of Work Package 2 are 1) to plan, strategically, an engagement approach to each of the target nations, using the existing technical and diplomatic contacts and 2) to work with the Board of Directors of the SKA Organisation to establish and operate a Funding Task Force, which will support the development of the funding model and an agreed financial structure to deliver construction and initial operation of the SKA.
WP3: development of the global governance for the SKA Project
Partner: Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)
WP Leader: Patricia Vogel
This work package builds on the output of the PrepSKA policy Work Package on the Governance and Legal Framework of the SKA. WP3 advises and analyses how a global governance structure can be implemented in time for the expected decision point on construction of the SKA and what kind of governance structure(s) would be suitable. The governance and legal issues require research and guidance of experts as well as stimulation of the dialogue between the (potential) partners in the SKA project.
WP4: development of a global approach to industry engagement for the SKA
Partners: Italian National Institute for Astrophysics (INAF), Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO)
WP leader: Corrado Perna
Work Package 4 aims to provide the framework of a global strategy for industrial collaboration in the Construction Phase. It is intended to enable the involvement of industrial partners and maximise both the scientific performance of the SKA as well as the exploitation of industrial potential. In addition, Work Package 4 will assist the development of the SKA1’s Procurement Bylaw as part of the integrated overall governance package for SKA1’s Legal Entity, starting from the results achieved in PrepSKA.
WP5: Developing the SKA as a tool to address global challenges
Partner: Max Planck Gesellschaft (MPG)
WP leader: Michael Kramer
Work Package 5 addresses questions related to the global challenges of the SKA, which are concerned not only to technical advances and new collaborations in areas such as energy supply, electronic hardware, information and communication technology and computing, but also socio-economic questions related to training and education of a next generation of engineers and scientists, which have the potential to create large impact and opportunity for the corresponding economies.
